5 tips to start looking for a job that truly matters to you

The hybrid world isn’t the only thing that’s changed. Job hunting has transformed too. It’s no longer about sending a CV and crossing your fingers. Today, it’s about self-reflection, strategy, and personal branding. If you’re in the “I want change” phase, this guide will walk you through it step by step.

Take a step back. Don’t start job hunting until you know yourself

First—pause. Seriously. Don’t open Jobs.cz just yet. Instead, ask yourself:

  • What excites and fulfills me?
  • What values do I want my work to reflect?
  • What kind of company will feel like home to me?

Petra Kubita Nulíčková, HR expert at Palefire Capital, advises: “Start with yourself. Clarify who you are and what you really want—otherwise you’ll be searching blind.”

Do a simple SWOT analysis. On paper. Yes, with actual colorful markers.

Polish your LinkedIn. Now’s the time

Maybe you’re not a fan of online networks. But let’s be honest—when else is visibility more important than during a job search?

TIP! Did you know LinkedIn profiles with a photo get up to 21× more views? They also receive 9× more connection requests.

This is your chance to stand out. A well-written summary, relevant keywords, updated experience, and a few recommendations make a huge difference.

Petra Kubita Nulíčková: “A good LinkedIn profile takes 30 minutes. But the return is faster than your favorite flat white.”

Your CV: not more, but better

Forget the five-page CV listing every summer job since high school.

Instead:

  • Include only relevant experience
  • Highlight specific achievements and results
  • Ditch the clichés like “hardworking and flexible”

Ask yourself: Would I be excited to read this? If not, time to revise.

And the look? It should match your field. A designer’s CV should look different from a finance analyst’s.

Don’t stress over job listings. Choose the right companies

Most people search by job title. But titles can be misleading.

Instead:

  • Focus on companies whose culture aligns with your values
  • Explore their career pages, social media, and reviews on Atmoskop or Glassdoor

TIP! In episode 16 of Effective Talks, Petra Kubita Nulíčková shares that at the beginning of a job search, people often don’t know what they want. But once they set priorities, they start reading job ads with a new perspective. Listen on YouTube

According to Novoresume, up to 75% of candidates prefer companies with strong employer branding.

An interview is a two-way street, not a test

It’s not about “passing.” It’s about finding out if it’s a mutual fit.

Tips:

  • Practice your story (who you are, what you’re looking for, what you bring)
  • Prepare questions about the company (culture, work style, remote policy)
  • Don’t be afraid to ask what they expect and what the next steps are

And yes—you can talk about salary. Respectfully and clearly.

TIP! Candidates who come prepared with questions are 40% more likely to succeed.

Take your time. Calibrate.

Maybe you won’t get the job on the first try. Maybe you’ll get 10 rejection emails. But if you keep returning to who you are, what you’re looking for, and keep learning from each step—you’re on the right path.

Sometimes it takes courage. Sometimes a friend to lean on. And sometimes a coach or mentor
