Companies lack leaders. Why leadership is in crisis and what you can do about it

We hear it every day. Business owners talk about growth and innovation. They’re hiring new people, investing in technology and planning expansion. Still, many organizations are not functioning as they should. Not because they lack resources. But because they lack people who know how to lead others. According to the Global Leadership Forecast 2025 by DDI, 40% of people in leadership positions are actively considering stepping down. Their roles are overly demanding and they lack proper support.

If nearly half the people leading teams today are thinking about leaving, it’s hard to imagine any organization sustaining performance or growth. So the question is: who will show companies how to fix this?

The pain of poor leadership

Insufficient leadership depth is now a reality in most organizations. The 2025 leadership study shows that many companies lack a clear bench of people ready to step into leadership roles at different levels.

Exec reports that about 77% of companies lack clear leadership across levels. On top of that, employee trust in management is declining – from 46% in 2022 to just 29% in 2024.

What happens when leadership is missing

If no one in the company knows how to clearly lead others, results suffer.

  • Teams lose direction. Without clarity, people don’t know what the priorities are. This leads to lower productivity and growing frustration.
  • Turnover increases. People don’t just leave for better pay. They leave because they feel nobody is leading them in a meaningful way.
  • Strategy fails to take hold. Without leaders who can turn strategy into daily action, even the best plans remain on paper.

The solution? It exists and it’s not rocket science

One effective solution is to train emotional intelligence and set up structured learning programs for managers. In other words, targeted leadership development. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Start where the need is greatest. First, identify your leadership gaps. Who can think strategically? Who can lead a team and keep motivation up during tough times?
  1. Invest in structured development programs. Leadership can be trained. The most effective learning programs work with real situations, not just theory. Today, microlearning formats help people absorb and apply knowledge quickly.

  1. Create space for practice. People learn best by doing. Let mid-level managers lead real projects, make decisions under pressure and take ownership of outcomes.
  1. Measure and adjust. If you don’t track progress, you can’t know what’s working. Collect feedback, monitor team performance and adjust your programs accordingly.

TIP! According to the Harvard Business Impact 2025 study, only 28% of organizations have a clear succession plan for critical leadership roles. Most companies are not prepared for the departure or failure of a key leader.

Many managers have never been trained in how to lead people. They got promoted because they were good at their job. But technical skills and people leadership are two very different things.

What will leadership look like in 2026?

Looking at 2026 and beyond, one trend is clear. Companies that don’t address the leadership gap will struggle to keep up with a fast-changing market. Those that invest in growing their own leaders will be ahead.

Traditional top-down leadership no longer works. Organizations are looking for people who can combine technical literacy, especially around AI, with empathy and people skills.

TIP! According to a University of Salford Manchester study, annual performance reviews are becoming obsolete. From 2026 on, companies will shift to real-time feedback culture where leaders work with live data on team engagement and output.
